    Education

Education work, both within the community and within established education institutions, is important to Sankorfa. Individually, the members of Sankorfa teach regularly and have experience and interests in a wide variety of musical styles. As an ensemble, we work closely with students of all ages, tailoring our workshops and our masterclasses to cater for the requirements of the individual participants.

Sankorfa are available to lead workshops as either one-off events or as extended projects – for example, a series of weekly workshops – for universities, schools, music societies, festivals, and businesses. Workshops designed for younger students emphasize individual confidence building and are intended to develop skills such as listening, co-ordination, creativity, and teamwork. Experienced students can be offered workshops with a more specific focus such as contemporary music interpretation, advanced rhythm and counting skills, and ensemble improvisation and composition. Furthermore, by drawing on our individual interests outside Western art music, Sankorfa are able to offer workshops in body percussion, Brazilian samba, African drumming, Latin-American music, and Indian music. Masterclasses can be offered to percussion students on both solo and ensemble repertoire.

Ideally Sankorfa would like to combine a workshop or a masterclass with an evening recital. This will allow us the opportunity to perform a carefully selected repertoire from which we can further develop the themes and ideas discussed earlier in the day. Overall, we intend our educational work to be enjoyable both for the participants and for ourselves, and hope that we may be able to inspire and encourage the participants to continue to enjoy making music in the future.
